Welcome to My Data Science Portfolio!

Arcenis Rojas: Economist, Data Enthusiast, & R Programmer

Hello and welcome! I’m a data scientist with strong interests in the different applications of inferential and predictive modeling and really enjoy programming in the Tidyverse framework in R and enjoy working with Tidymodels framework for modeling.

I enjoy projects that allow me to learn and implement new techniques ranging from different types of regression analysis to more advanced machine learning algorithms. One of the most fun and rewarding personal projects of mine has been to create the cepumd package. You can read more about it here. You can also learn a little bit about my other projects here.

My interest in data science started in earnest while I was completing a Master’s Degree in Economics at The City University of New York - The City College. I learned to code in R through a course in Econometrics. The combination of statistical rigor, programming, and playing with data really caught my attention. I’m especially grateful to Dr. Kevin Foster for his not-so-gentle introduction to the field. His class was tough, but fun.

After completing my Master’s in Econ, I went to work for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics as an Economist with the Public-Use Microdata team of the Division of Consumer Expenditure Surveys. From there I went on to work as a proper data scientist in a variety of settings that allowed me to work with data in fields such as consumer economics, labor economics, aviation, healthcare, oil & gas, people analytics, and marketing. Through all of this I’ve had the chance to learn more advanced statistical methods, machine learning, some deep learning, NLP, more advanced programming skills in both R and Python, and lots about all the different fields in which I’ve worked.

I built this website using some great, open-source tools including R, RStudio, Positron, GitHub, and Quarto. I’m very grateful to all the folks that work on these tools for what they do. I’m also grateful to Sam Csik for her blog on how to add a blog to a Quarto website.
